On Future Horizons, François Leleux, one of the most distinguished oboists of our time, presents a collection of works for oboe by renowned living composers Nicolas Bacri, Michael Jarrell, and Thierry Escaich, expanding the instrument’s repertoire to new artistic possibilities. The album’s title, Future Horizons, explores new musical frontiers, reflecting Leleux’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of classical music through contemporary works. In Bacri’s Notturno, Leleux takes on the role of both soloist and conductor, leading the Frankfurt Radio Symphony. In Jarrell’s Aquateinteand Escaich’ Double Concerto for Oboe, Violin & Orchestra,in which we can also hear Lisa Batiashvili, recognised for her incredible virtuosity, the orchestra joins him under the baton of Andrés Orozco-Estrada.
Each work on this album is a world premiere recording, with all the pieces written especially for these artists. Andrés Orozco-Estrada, together with Frankfurt Radio Symphony, has a wide discography on PENTATONE, while François Leleux and Lisa Batiashvili make their label debut.
This double album, Mozart & Flute in Paris, brings together nine captivating works, all with their origins in Paris, which feature a solo flute. Emmanuel Pahud is joined by his colleagues from ‘wind supergroup’ Les Vents Français – oboist François Leleux (here also conducting the Orchestre de chambre de Paris), clarinettist Paul Meyer, bassoonist Gilbert Audin and horn-player Radovan Vlatković – and by Belgian harpist Anneleen Lenaerts.
“The pieces on this album represent different golden ages of the flute,” says Pahud. The earliest, dating from 1778 are two concertante works that Mozart wrote while visiting Paris. The newest, premiered in 2014 by Pahud and the Orchestre de chambre de Paris, is Dreamtime by Philippe Hersant. The intervening period is represented by pieces by Saint-Saëns, Fauré, Chaminade and Poulenc, composers whose music embodies France’s special relationship with the flute.

Each of the five members of wind ‘supergroup’ Les Vent Français, partnered by pianist Eric le Sage, plays a sonata written by Paul Hindemith in the dramatic years between 1936 and 1943 – compact, lucid and engaging works for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and alto horn. “These Hindemith sonatas are a great asset to the wind repertory,” says oboist François Leleux. “Hindemith took a very particular approach to each instrument, with a wonderful sense for its individual sound.”

The oboe has held a special place in France’s culture since the time of Louis XIV, and on Bienvenue en France the oboist François Leleux, partnered by pianist Emmanuel Strosser, performs works originating from the 20th century. The composers are Debussy, Saint-Saëns and Dutilleux, the lesser-known Pierné, Bozza and Sancan, and the contemporary Thierry Pécou. This music could not find a more eloquent advocate than Leleux, praised by The Scotsman as “a remarkably charismatic, flamboyant performer, matching immaculate technique with a dazzlingly vivid identification with his music.”

“[…] l’ensemble Les Vents Français est composé de musiciens exceptionnels (le clarinettiste Paul Meyer, le hautboïste François Leleux, le flûtiste Emmanuel Pahud, le bassoniste Gilbert Audin et le corniste Radovan Vlatkovic). Des musiciens prestigieux que l’on retrouve ici avec le pianiste Éric Le Sage dans un disque au programme très intéressant s’intéressant aux modernistes (Milhaud, Jolivet, Magnard, Nielsen) auxquels s’ajoutent deux pièces contemporaines Oslterlied le Sextuor pour quintette à vents et piano de Philippe Hersant et Mecanic Song pour quintette à vents et piano de Thierry Escaich.
Si le modernisme musical consiste à vouloir “tester et dépasser les limites de la construction esthétique” comme le dit Daniel Albright, il est aussi une question d’audace, de désir d’innovation et de liberté. Naturellement techniquement et musicalement ce disque est assez formidable, mais la virtuosité est également alliée à l’intelligence musicale. Il retranscrit jusque dans les moindres silences, dans chaque phase musicale, dans chaque ligne harmonique les idées novatrices, les envies d’évolution et de bousculer un certain académisme et la liberté de Milhaud, Jolivet, Magnard et Nielsen mais également la modernité des deux pièces de Philippe Hersant et Thierry Escaich. C’est aussi un excellent moyen de se replonger dans une formation (quintette à vents plus piano) pas si fréquente que cela et dans des œuvres parfois trop peu jouées. C’est notamment le cas pour le quintette d’Alberic Magnard rappelant parfois César Franck avec cette profondeur, ces lignes musicales et cet équilibre entre une écriture très fournie et des passages plus apaisés.
Chaque instrument joue successivement un rôle de soliste : d’abord la clarinette (Tendre), le hautbois (Léger) et enfin le basson (joyeux).
Oslterlied le Sextuor pour quintette à vents et piano de Philippe Hersant trouve son origine dans le Christ lag in Todesbanden et joue sur les variations. Une musique pleine de couleurs, de finesses et de résonnances qui fait écho à celle de Thierry Escaich. Formidable !”
